Magnesium is a commonly used sacrificial anode material in electrochemical cathodic protection engineering. It has high chemical activity, a relatively negative electrode potential, and a high driving voltage. At the same time, it is difficult to form an effective protective film on the surface of magnesium. Therefore, in aqueous media, the driving force of the micro-corrosion cells on the magnesium surface is large, the protective film is easily dissolved, and the self-corrosion of magnesium is intense. A hydrogen evolution reaction occurs at the cathode: 2H⁺ + 2e⁻ → H₂. Magnesium-based sacrificial anodes include three types: pure magnesium, Mg-Mn series alloys, and Mg-Al-Zn-Mn series alloys. Their common characteristics are low density, high theoretical capacitance, negative potential, low polarization rate, and a large driving voltage for steel (>0.6V). They are suitable for protecting metal components in high-resistivity soils and freshwater environments.
Characteristics and Functions of Magnesium Anodes:
Magnesium anodes, also known as magnesium alloy anodes or magnesium sacrificial anodes, are used in cathodic protection systems as important equipment and materials to prevent electrochemical corrosion. Their characteristics include low density, high theoretical capacitance, negative potential, low polarization rate, and a large driving voltage for steel (>0.6V). They are suitable for protecting metal components in high-resistivity soils and freshwater environments. Classification of Magnesium Anodes:
Based on production processes, they are mainly divided into cast anodes and extruded anodes.
Based on applications, they are mainly divided into water heater anodes and engineering anodes.
Based on shapes, they are further classified into rod-shaped, strip-shaped, D-type, S-type, and custom-shaped anodes.
Based on materials, they are mainly divided into AZ63, AZ31, AZ91, and other anodes.
Applications of Magnesium Anodes:
Typically, D-type and S-type anodes are mainly used in soil environments. Strip-shaped anodes are primarily used in high-resistivity soils, freshwater, and confined spaces, making them engineering anodes. Rod-shaped anodes are commonly used for anti-corrosion in electric water heaters and boilers.
Magnesium anodes are specialized anti-corrosion materials for cathodic protection engineering. They possess extremely high electrochemical performance, consume uniformly, have a long service life, and generate a large amount of current. They are suitable for the cathodic protection of metal structures in soil and freshwater media. During the cathodic protection process, magnesium anodes consume evenly, resulting in a long service life. In practical applications, magnesium anodes provide more obvious protection for target structures. In soils with a resistivity greater than 8000 ohm·m, the use of magnesium anodes is recommended.
